Train to retain – A State Government initiative

12 May 2008

by: Susan Sunderland

In a bid to ease Queensland’s skills shortages and the effects of an ageing population, the Queensland Government’s Train to retain team is working on an industry awareness program to promote appropriate behaviour in workplaces.

The team will travel across Queensland to speak with Group Training Organisations (GTOs) and their field officers to discuss apprenticeship/traineeship retention strategies and to expand commitment to building safe, supportive and productive workplaces that ensure a quality training experience for everyone.

Train to retain is an initiative of the $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan developed in response to a report by the Training Ombudsman entitled Improving workplace practices to help reduce harassment of apprentices and trainees in Queensland.

Train to retain aims to:

  • encourage more people to undertake apprenticeships and traineeships
  • ensure those who do undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship are retained and receive the encouragement and support needed to complete the training.

For more information on the Train to retain initiative please contact Sue Sunderland at susan.sunderland@deta.qld.gov.au or visit: http://www.trainandemploy.qld.gov.au/client/about_us/skillsplan/train_to_retain.html
