It started with helping his neighbour build their house and Benn Gudenswager knew his future was in Carpentry. Benn is building himself a brighter future by undertaking a school based Carpentry apprenticeship, employed by Golden West Employment Solutions. Attending school four days, the fifth day is spent working on site with his host employer Barry Willis Constructions Pty Ltd.
A usual day for Benn consists of starting on the job site at seven, where he preps the work area for the day ahead. After smoko it’s onto fitting architraves, measuring the door frames and nailing the architraves to the door frames until lunch.
Benn said he decided he wanted to become a Carpenter after helping his neighbour build his house and liked how everything fits together to become something complete.
After his lunch break it’s back to finishing the morning jobs and moving on to tiling, “When tiling it is my responsibility to mix the cement ensuring I use the right quantities, lay and cut the tiles to scale.” Before finishing time Benn tidies the work area ready for the next day.
“Going through Golden West, allows me and my host to get on with my training. They really help out a lot with all the paper work such as TAFE and tools for your trade.” Benn believes you shouldn’t jump into any career, “find something you enjoy so you do not end up regretting your decision.”
By undertaking a school based apprenticeship Benn said he will finish his trade quicker and will have a full-time job when he leaves school. “Golden West helped me find my apprenticeship and take care of all the paperwork.” Once finished his trade Benn hopes to own his own business. He believes that in order to succeed you have to find something you are passionate about, “Find something you like- don’t assume you can just rock up and you will like it.”
Benn Host Employer Barry says “Benn is great to have on the work site he is keen to learn and motivated to try new things.” “Going through a Group Training Organisation such as Golden West allows me to hand my apprentice back during times of down turn if needed – gives me the extra flexibility.”
